Health Promotion

Spa National School is very proud to have been a successful Health Promoting school for many years. All members of our school community work continuously to highlight the importance of healthy living to all of our students in the school.

Our Health Promotion Committee under the leadership of Mrs. Griffin Crowe has worked tirelessly to provide a safe and health enhancing social and physical environment and to organise a variety of activities every school year which will reinforce the important lessons of Health Promotion to all members of our school community. Some of those activities are as follows!

  • Health is wealth! Promotion Days
  • Fruity Breaks at first ‘sos’
  • Advice workshops on healthy lunches
  • Visits from external experts (local Doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors)
  • Participation in the Food Dudes programme
  • Whole school movement and mindfulness breaks
  • Friendship Day
  • Playground buddies
  • Mental Health workshops

All of these activities have been organised to support students and aimed at showing them that they can take action and generate positive change in their lives.

Food Dudes

Spa N.S. has been an active participant in the Food Dudes programme over the past few years. This programme was developed to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to create a healthy eating culture within schools. It has always proven to be very popular amongst our students.

Spa N.S. Playground Buddies

Our Playground buddies system was started in 2014 and they have been hugely effective since then. Every year, students from second class take up roles (on a rota basis) as buddies. The buddies are responsible for the distribution of the play equipment on the junior yard. They also work with the supervising teacher to ensure that everyone has someone to play with and that no one is being left out of games. They always do a really great job and we are very proud of them in Spa N.S. Thank you buddies!
